The prose themselves are as to be expected from the time period. I always enjoy the classical style. However, the story starts off with a little too much of marriage charades. It's a matter of what qualities do the men have, what qualities do the girls have, and how those make them suitable for partnership.

Eventually, the story progresses to the point where I actually am invested to know what takes place. If the conversation were more than discussion on marriage matters, the book would have been more engaging. Each conversation felt very much the same as the one before. Yes, the topics of people in general and society come up, but the vast majority of the books is about a family hoping for marriages. There is a lot of good wit, though.

For me, the book was a drag. I was curious to know what happens next, but not engaged in the slightest. Anything and everything that took place was immediately connected to marriage. That was the entire book. There was nothing more to it. It has its merits, but it is not at all for me.
